In this tutorial you will learn how to use the Peak Meter Pro (DPMP)\'s real time capabilities in Ableton Live: use it to let any instrument influence the parameters of any effect for any other instrument. This tutorial shows these capabilities with Blue Cat\'s Stereo Chorus freeware effect.
Step By Step
- Insert the DPMP on the source track (select the track and drag and drop the plug-in): Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/01.png
- Select the DPMP preset settings in the main menu (right click on the background): Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/02.png
- Enable the DPMP Midi output for the transformed peak envelope, and set the CC number: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/03.png
- Insert the effect you want to control on the target track (we are using Blue Cat\'s Stereo Chorus here): Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/04.png
- Select the chorus presets settings in the main menu: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/05.png
- Enable the chorus MIDI input for one or several parameters, and set the MIDI Channel to Omni (0) and the MIDI CC to the same value as for the DPMP output: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/06.png
- Insert a MIDI track: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/07.png
- Switch to the \'Session\' view: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/08.png
- Select the source track with DPMP as input, and the destination track with the chorus as output (for an external hardware device select here the MIDI output port): Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/09.png
- Hit the play button, the selected parameters are now being changed according to the source track envelope: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/10.png
- Hide the RMS curves on the DPMP to monitor only the peaks: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/11.png
- Tweak the Amount and offset parameters of the DPMP: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/12.png
- Tweak the DPMP MIDI output response: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/14.png
- Enjoy and play: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_ableton_live/15.png
Conclusion You are now able to use the Peak Meter Pro with Ableton Live: you can now use this methodology with other effects. All combinations are possible, and you can even use external hardware devices as targets of the DPMP MIDI CC messages!
