In this tutorial you will learn how to use the Peak Meter Pro (DPMP)\'s real time capabilities in Cakewalk Sonar: use it to let any instrument influence the parameters on any effect for any other instrument in a \'live\' context. This tutorial shows these capabilities with Blue Cat\'s Stereo Chorus freeware effect.
Step By Step
- Insert the DPMP on the source track: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/01.png
- Select the DPMP preset settings in the main menu (right click on the background): Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/02.png
- Enable the DPMP Midi output for the transformed peak envelope, and set the CC number: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/03.png
- Insert the target fx (Stereo Chorus) on the target track: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/04.png
- Select the chorus presets settings in the main menu: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/05.png
- Enable the chorus MIDI input for one or several parameters, and set the MIDI Channel to Omni (0) and the MIDI CC to the same value as for the DPMP output: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/06.png
- Insert a MIDI track: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/07.png
- Setup the MIDI track output to the Stereo Chorus DXi: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/08.png
- Setup MIDI track echo on: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/09.png
- Open the Options - Global Settings panel: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/10.png
- Select \'Echo soft synth input to all MIDI tracks\' so that the Peak Meter MIDI CC messages are sent to all tracks: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/11.png
- Enable input echo on both tracks and play - the source track triggers the target track chorus parameters in real time: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/12.png
- Hide the RMS curves on the DPMP to monitor only the peaks: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/13.png
- Tweak the Amount and offset parameters of the DPMP: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/14.png
- Tweak the DPMP MIDI output response: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/16.png
- Enjoy and play: Image: http://www.musiciantutorials.com/images/blue_cats_digital_peak_meter_pro_in_sonar_live_/17.png
Conclusion You are now able to use the Peak Meter Pro in a live context with Cakewalk Sonar: you can now apply this methodology with other effects. All combinations are possible: imagine a concert where the drummer\'s play modifies the guitar sound, the singer\'s voice is muted during the Bass solo etc. Let your creativity express itself!
